Inspiration: Playful Spaces

While architecture and design principles are well backed up through research papers, rule books, and best practice, design is hugely about having fun.

A room that plays by every rule in the book and doesn’t go a little outside the box can often lack character and charm.

Fun, unexpected details within a space will have the ability to wow people and make them smile.

From tropical wallpaper prints to contrasting colour combinations, sometimes more really is more and its definitely more fun.

There are lots of ways to achieve a playful interiors scheme that is also seriously stylish.

For one, pattern is great for adding a new dimension to a look and using a mix of contrasting patterns through fabrics, soft furnishings and wall art will introduce a playful edge to any space.

When it comes to pattern, it is no secret that the KLD team also love using tiles for a prominent block of interesting pattern, whether they be decorative or geometrical.

Thinking outside the box and trying things out of the ordinary with a touch of your own personality will make a space that is both personally appealing as well as being an expression of your own unique style.

The nature of spaces designed to be fun, novel and original is that sometimes you do need to make up your own rules.

You can be as creative as you want and layer as many different colours, styles and eras as you feel right.

Here are some of our favourite playful spaces.
