The Ballsbridge Residence was a large residential project completed in 2015. KLD were appointed to manage the project both in terms of interior architecture and interior design.
The brief for this space was to combine two adjoining properties and completely reconfigure the interior space. The project also involved an extension to the rear of the building to create a more contemporary, spacious family home.

Bespoke joinery was an important feature of the Ballsbridge Residence, every room features joinery designed by the KLD team.

Circulation was a key consideration for the project – there needed to be a balance between open family space as well as some more private space for mum and dad to relax in.

KLD combined a mix of styles from different eras to create an exciting aesthetic. Salvaged vintage pieces, contemporary furniture and lighting, and custom furniture and lighting were combined to achieve a diverse mix.

Rathmichael Residence – Progress Week 1
The start of a new year brought the start of another new project for the team and KLD.
Rathmichael Residence is an exciting reconfiguration and extension of a large residential project in collaboration with Cantrell & Crowley Architects. The first floor of the existing bungalow is being reconfigured and a second storey is being added. Take a look at the some before photos below.
The before photos really show you how dark the space was before, with heavy wood and strong colours dominating both the interior and the exterior of the property. The design aims to open up the space bringing in the natural light, maximising the circulation and the view.
All this joinery has now been stripped out and we have a shell to start our build from.
The family home will feature open plan living spaces, double height ceilings, cosy nooks and beautiful tiling and joinery details to name but a few.. The eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional design makes for an exciting interior from both a spatial layout and materials perspective. It is one we are very much looking forward to seeing develop over the coming months, and will be sharing snippets of all the stunning samples and details with you along the way.
But for the moment.. here are some photos of week one’s progress as the site got stripped out for works to begin! It always surprises me how quickly a house can be completely gutted and a blank canvas for construction to begin and our designs to start taking shape.
We will keep you up to date on our Rathmichael Residence – Progress as the build develops.
The 2015 Fit Out Awards took place at the DoubleTree by the Hilton Hotel Dublin this past Thursday, November 5th, celebrating Ireland’s finest leaders and organisations within the fit out field.
The KLD team got real glam prior to this wonderful black tie soirée. Over 600 fit out professionals were present: an incredibly talented group of guests up for a spectrum of awards, from Supplier of the Year to Sustainability Achievement.
Colm O’Regan, mastermind behind Irish Mammies, graced us with his presence as the host of the evening. His effortlessly hilarious nature made for perpetual laughter throughout the entire awards ceremony.
We were overjoyed when we won Residential Project of the Year for our Ranelagh Residence, and that was further extended when Roisin won Young Designer of the Year. We were also shortlisted for Fit Out Practice of the Year, as well as International Project of the Year for Tootoomoo London.
It is truly such a great accomplishment for KLD, especially considering the many skillful professionals we were up against.
A charity pop-up casino commenced and a groovy cover band took the stage post-awards, the ideal scenario to celebrate our interior architecture and design achievements (fueled by complementary champagne!)
Thanks to all who made the Fit Out Awards such a memorable experience. It was such an elegant evening and all of us here at Kingston Lafferty Design are thrilled to officially be winners of such estimable awards.
Collaboration between DFS and KLD for the Autumn Ideal Homes Exhibition
I am super excited to say that we are currently collaborating with the fantastic DFS on this Autumn’s Ideal Homes Exhibition.
As very much a KLD team effort, we won the pitch to design the DFS Showhouse and the DFS 140m exhibition stand.
I am really excited to get my hands on the house and hopefully provide some inspiration and excitement at the show!
We will be taking on the Interior Architecture of the house and the Interior Design. Taking inspiration from the stunning new DFS look-book, we will be showcasing how the DFS furniture can be used in creative and fun ways, complimenting your own personal taste.
The aim for us is to create an exciting showhouse that has maximum impact for visitors, references some key trends and fresh ideas and overall gives visitors a fun and positive experience. So far it is proving to be very exciting.
We have gotten to know DFS a lot more recently and I have to say their products and style is impressive.
With existing collaborations with French Connection and The Sofa Workshop, they offer a wide range of styles and furniture that suits a vast array of styles. I am particularly in love with the Zinc French Connection cuddler… the perfect size for curling up!
It was their recent look-book that wowed me. With their fully styled sets and images, I saw the scope and versatility of what they can provide.
We are hoping to use their furniture pieces in an exciting unusual way, combining unexpected pieces with clever interior architecture and interior design to create an overall original and eclectic feel in both the house and the stand.
We are looking to team up further with some of our favourite interior suppliers and I am delighted to say that Mullan lighting are also on board to provide some stunning lighting features within the stand. Combining some of their well known statement pieces with some bespoke pieces that we are designing, the lighting is definitely going to pack a punch!
Lighting is definitely one of the most important interior elements for me. Not only can it completely transform atmospheres, it can add height and scale to a space. Mullan are well known for their industrial style pieces which will tie in really well with the other detailing.
Three of my favourite lights of the moment from Mullan are below.

I will be updating the blog as the job progresses so check out all of the behind the scenes…
