For the salon we wanted to create a space which is calm and chaos free with a luxury and elegant expression. Working with the existing building, we sought to emphasise the beautiful cast iron staircase making this a central feature within the space; its decorative nature contrasting against the simplicity of the surrounding design.
As the space is long and narrow, we tried to build away from the walls, inserting joinery to the central core whilst allowing some joinery to appear to grow from the walls by aligning to the committed material palette. Using block, simple forms repeated throughout which act to define zones and provide privacy from the exterior.Embodying a minimal unpretentious colour & material palette, we aimed to place emphasis on the geometry & clean lines of all forms. Employing a colour block method which further helped to define zones and to create dual atmospheres. The calm atmosphere is enhanced by an illuminated glow from a suspended sphere centrally located in the space. The block forms are broken up by using mirrored circles & Perspex which help to enlarge the space as well as providing balance. Sculptural furniture sits elevated against the simple forms also. The back area reached through a fully tiled tunnel has a more theatrical sense about it with navy enveloping walls and ceiling, rich in tactility and texture with plush navy velvet curtains.
Although both front and back area contrast greatly they are linked through the celebration of refined aesthetic, simple and harmonious in nature.
