Residential
KLD were involved as Interior Architects on the Chruchtown project, designing the structural layout and a refreshed, contemporary design throughout. The project consisted of knocking down and rebuilding a new extension, slightly extending the footprint and reconfiguring the space to maximise the natural light coming into the rear of the property and drawing the garden in to the kitchen/living/dining space. As well as the open plan living area we looked at the rest of the spaces to provide an adaptable guest bed with e-suite downstairs, a separate lounge room and luxurious master suite.
The brief was to reimagine an outdated and poorly configured residential property, to increase functionality, storage, open plan living and aesthetically create a sleek, minimal, bright environment for the client couple. The existing building consisted of a series of small, ineffective rooms and a poorly insulated and designed narrow lean to conservatory building, which we opted to fully remove and to rethink with our structural engineer so as to completely transform how the space felt.
Our role included full design layout, extension and all interior design, joinery and furniture design, FF&E and styling and decoration.
Our concept stemmed on integrating the beautiful mature back garden into the interior space. We designed the extension to include a new fully glazed rear elevation which met a full height wall of mirror. We also raised the ceiling height to add a sense of space and airiness. The material palette was designed to be natural, timeless and linking to the garden space. We combined a selection of timbers including charred oak, limed oak floors and with light marble, mirror and indoor planting walls.
The feature of the space was the view so we designed all of the functional spaces – storage and kitchen, to be completely concealed and seamless. When not in use, they are completely hidden, allowing an open entertainment space free from clutter and mess.
The front of the house had minimal daylight so we sought to link the spaces between together while still facilitating the option of privacy and screening. We designed a linking glazed Crittal effect wall and bench detail linking the front rooms to the new open plan lounge/diner/kitchen.
The result was a light, bright, spacious environment. Sleek detailing ensures a calm feel to the space. We have transformed what was a dated standard semi-detached Dublin home into a timeless, contemporary sanctuary and entertainment space.
