KLD were recruited to design this St Stephen’s Green Penthouse and implement a private office facility, in the heart of Dublin’s city centre, overlooking the lush St Stephen’s Green park. As part of the brief for this job, design and creative thinking were paramount, whilst catering for a variety of requirements: privacy, meeting spaces, hot desks, event/ entertaining spaces and board meetings.
This was very much a detail orientated project which was designed in an ambitious way. Due to the small size of the space, every detail was under the microscope. The concept was a highly streamlined, geometric, masculine aesthetic with a simple, strong material palette. The layout was deliberately streamlined and linear, with a mix of finishes, it was imperative that each and every detail lined up with each other, for an overall considered look on close inspection.
Given the client’s reputation for excellence within the industry, the impact and first impression of the design had to be strong. Because of the size, each space needed to be multi-functional; a break away from the traditional corporate office, while still maintaining a professional, clean and high-end finish. The client wanted a space that combined a relaxed, informal atmosphere with a sophisticated and fully catered feel. One aspect of the design that KLD focused on heavily was the changing zones and associated experiences within each space.
Materials were used to signify changing spaces and functions. For example, as you enter the space, coming out of the lift an informal reception/ lobby is the first space entered. Here customised brass and marble flooring, mirrored wall and life-size trees set the tone: a luxurious, monochromatic palette, softened by a strong emphasis on nature. One of the main features is the link between this reception and the main space.
We created a fully formed marble tunnel with completely flushed finish and recessed LED channels throughout. There were many complex engineering details to consider with this, especially in relation to the floating marble ceiling. A full height custom sliding door with ribbed glazing visually links the two spaces, while functionally providing privacy on both sides.
