Kingston Lafferty Design’s South Point office design was a pivotal project with Iconic Offices, as their largest office fit out yet. The brief for this project was to push the boundaries of what a co-working space could be. In order to do this, the design drew influence from the hospitality industry, in particular the design of boutique hotels. The project was as such an opportunity to express strong creativity and create a multitude of environments within one building.
South Point is more than a large office, it is a brand within itself. The concept was a high end, inspirational aesthetic with a polished finish, hinged on fun and excitement. To achieve this look, the design was experimental with colour, texture and materiality. KLD created a broad palette, zoning each space aesthetically as well as functionally.
The design of South point is sophisticated with a very playful edge, with bespoke joinery elements throughout. From the concrete and brass monolithic reception desk to the fully upholstered, acoustically sealed phone booths, right down to the luxurious library meeting room with a secret bar. Another critical part of the brief was to create a space where workers could invite clients to, outside of their own independent working station, and even encouraging cross company collaboration.
Our design team worked closely with Iconic Offices and contractors NSBS to achieve a design that was both inspiring and visually strong, as well as completely functionally and technically sound. One of the main challenges of this design was the push to create a space where nothing is compromised, this was especially important given that the project had a very tight time-frame for completion.
Breakout spaces were a key focus of the design, given that several different companies would be mixed within the space. Part of the brief involved thinking about how the design could break the boundaries between companies, who in many cases were occupying the same floor. The client wanted to create spaces that would encourage cross company collaboration through the creation of open, inviting and exciting social spaces. The design proposed by KLD for the canteen drew a lot of inspiration from restaurant design, evolving a space that was naturally social and more relaxed than a traditional office canteen.
